My dad and I were discussing the upcoming quinceañera that our church was sponsoring for one of the girls. For those who do not know what a quinceañera is, it is a very special birthday party on a girl’s 15th year. People with Hispanic heritage often celebrate it. Since we live in San Antonio, which is mostly Mexican populated, it’s common to hear of quinceañeras. Often, these parties are as extravagant as weddings themselves! (FYI, the word ” quinceañera” is derived from “quince,” which means 15, and “año,” which means “year”).

birthday_cake.jpgMy dad was the master of ceremonies for this quinceañera and he needed some slots to fill the program, especially the music. He asked me to sing a song but I couldn’t think of anything. I only had love songs and Christian songs in my repertoire. He told me to sing anything!

Personally, I feel awkward when I perform a song that is irrelevant to the occasion. For example, if I play a special music for church, I do not want to play a love song or something classical. No, I want to play something that is Christian! Nothing I had was really appropriate for a quinceañera. To me, the song had to have a positive message about growing up since it was essentially a birthday party.

Then, I thought of the perfect song “Find Your Wings” by Mark Harris on his newest first-solo album Line Between The Two. It is actually one of the top 10 songs on the Christian Contemporary Music Charts today. This Christian piece is the songwriter’s message to his children to tell them that he loves them, to aim high, and to keep close to God. It was perfect!

mark_harris.jpgI chorded this song for the quinceañera. Since I have a weird voice range, I normally have to transpose every song that I chord. Unfortunately, as I was trying to find the perfect key, I discovered that there was no perfect key. The song was too high and too low for me to sing at any key signature. This was really disappointing for me, all that work of chording the song and then finding out that you can’t even use them! Oh well, it turned out that I was unable to sing at the quinceañera. In fact, I couldn’t even attend it since I was taking a test out-of-town.

I think I’m the first one to post any music transcription for these this song again (see my Avalon chords)! I think I’m on a roll! Enjoy the chords; my loss is your gain! I hope you will be able to reach all the notes.

My daughter was a victim of a rape when she was 15 years old, She is now 21 years old and she is getting married. I will be dedicating your song find your wings to her on her wedding day. I wish I could sing it to her instead. If I had money I would love to have you there sing it for her.

    Thank you

This song is about my life and where I am…. I am 39 years old and my husband of 44 was accidently killed June 20th 2005. We were married for 21-1/2 years. I was 17. We have 2 children David 19, Amanda 18. It has been a very hard year but we are doing awesome only because of our Father God and Jesus his son. But this song is so heart felt and meaningful to the very core of my being. It is a song I have to have my children hear….it is my heart for them….It is the heart of a very special person who has stepped up to the plate with us to help us learn to fly again. As I write this I have a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes…..It is a very beautiful song and not knowing the reason behind your words….I would have to say that God wrote it just for me…..So I thank Him for the words and for moving my soul…..and I thank you for putting the words to music….how so totally beautiful…..May you be blessed beyond words…my friend.

    In Christ
    Andrea

Thank you so much. I have been looking for this for a long time. I will be playing this for my seniors in my youth group this year. This is for their graduation ceremony.

  5. Sandy Says:

I heard this song while I was driving to work at midnight one night, and it made me think about my kids. My girls are all just about grown and leaving home now. My youngest has made me very proud. She is in 3 different gospel groups, holding a full time job and starting college this fall. She moved in with some friends from church after graduation and is continuing to grow spiritually. My middle daughter is getting ready to move out, and the youngest is steady telling her not to waste the talents that God blessed her with in art and music. My oldest has long since moved out and had a ministery in transporting kids to church, and witnessing to people on drugs and in the projects. I raised my girls in church, and this song says what I feel. I hope that they hear it and know that it is what I meant to do. Thanks for putting it to music.

One of our members would like our Praise Team to use your wonderful song “Find Your Wings” for Confirmation Sunday coming up in May. I’ve gotten the lyrics/guitar chords…is it possible to get the melody written out for keyboard?? Thanks, Rex C. Engle, Lutheran Church of the Lakes, Addison Michigan.

  7. Gloria Says:

I just want to say THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! My mom has a foster daughter that is 15 months old. We are praying God’s will her in her life right now, her mom may be getting her back, but she does not want her, she only wants her sister. Her intetions are to give the baby away to a friend whom the courts and state have said no to already. We have a loving family in our church who would take her love her and raise her as there own, if the oppurtuinity was given. The mother is addicted to drugs as well and can not tend to an infant, plus the infant has several health problems from being born addicted to drugs. We have decided to dedicate her to God this sunday. I found this song tonight, and I am running it by mom in the morning, and everyone else involved but if I have my way this song will be at her dedication!!! It is so perfect thanks!!!
