Here in the United States, the biggest sale of the year seems to be the day after Thanksgiving, dubbed “Black Friday.”
Origins
The etymology of the name, “Black Friday,” has an interesting history. At the end of the year, companies often found themselves in “the red.” Their business ledgers showed negative profit. In a desperate to get in “the black,” an end-of-the-year profit, businesses staged huge sales the day after Thanksgiving to lure customers into buying for Christmas. Now, this practice of getting in the black is uncommon. Today, the sales are usually a social expectation for companies. Since society expects these sales, spending is doubled the day after Thanksgiving. Smart businesses will get a cut from this increased spending.
What This Means to You
Black Friday is the best time to buy gifts for Christmas. Prices are at an all-time low. Though, it is important to note that while some prices for popular merchandise are slashed, prices for other products in the store are raised. Companies do this to make up for the money lost to the popular sales.
Circulars
Because of the popularity of this day, it is important to carefully plan shopping. Look at the newspaper circulars released on Thanksgiving Day or the day before Thanksgiving. There are many sites that host leaked insider circulars early. The main site is Black Friday - The OFFICIAL Site for the Hottest Day of the Year. There other similar sites (look at my articles listed on the left side of this page), but most contain the same things.
Tips
Remember to be early. People wait outside stores at 3 AM just to get a good sale. Sometimes they camp outside the day before. At the very least, be there an hour early. Though, 2-3 hours may be required to avoid being at the back of the line for a really great sale.
I recommend the method of “divide and conquer.” It is important to bring somebody with you. A buddy is good for company and for support. A buddy is helpful to make sure you can take every advantage of a sale. Additionally, if there is more then one store that has a really good sale, you could split up.
The day is in about a month so BE READY! It is not too early to start planning.

[...] With all of my tips, rants, and raves of black friday spaning a multitide of articles (Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV, and this one), I thought that I should write about my black Friday experience this 2005 Thanksgiving holiday. ch_client = ‘artbarizo’; ch_width = 468; ch_height = 60; ch_color_title = ‘000000′; ch_default_tab = ‘Best Deals’; ch_non_contextual = 1; Free Laptop or Desktop Computer - Just sign up for one no-obligation offer and refer ten friends! Paper Ads You could say that it started Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, when I started to seriously pour though the ads (the leaked advertisements on Black Friday 2005 mind you). Man! It was a struggle to get though them! Let me tell you, it is much easier to get through the Thanksgiving ads on paper then on the computer. Buy a newspaper everyday on Thanksgiving week to make sure you get every advertisement. Trust me, it will be worth it. [...]

[...] First of all, I want to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving! Our family really does not celebrate Thanksgiving, or any holiday for that matter. Really, our highlight of the break is black Friday. ch_client = ‘artbarizo’; ch_width = 468; ch_height = 60; ch_color_title = ‘000000′; ch_default_tab = ‘Best Deals’; ch_non_contextual = 1; Free Laptop or Desktop Computer - Just sign up for one no-obligation offer and refer ten friends! We’ve been looking for a laptop long time and the Wal-Mart HP Pavilion ze2308wm Notebook ($398) looked really attractive. My dad wanted to make sure that we would have a chance in getting this tomorrow. So, he called a number of Wal-Mart stores for some details on how the sale will work. [...]

[...] This post is supplementary to my Black Friday article. In addition to the already mentioned sites for sales circulars, I found another good place to find these “insider” advertisements. ch_client = ‘artbarizo’; ch_width = 468; ch_height = 60; ch_color_title = ‘000000′; ch_default_tab = ‘Best Deals’; ch_non_contextual = 1; Free Laptop or Desktop Computer - Just sign up for one no-obligation offer and refer ten friends! Blackfridayads.com - Pretty much the deals and circulars in all three mentioned sites are the same. But, there is a small possibility of little discrepancies of what one might want to be aware. Generally, I like to stick with Black Friday 2005 - The OFFICIAL Site for the Hottest Day of the Year since it is the first one and the most popular. [...]
